Husøy

Did you ever dream about living on a small island surrounded by beautiful views? You may be thinking about some tropical paradise with white-sand beaches and the shade of palms. But did you know that an equally amazing alternative can be found in the far-north of Norway? Well, you won’t find any palms there, but it does not make it any less breathtaking!

There are almost 50 thousand islands in Norway. The second biggest one is called Senja, about 2-3 hours drive from the “Paris of the North”, the capital of northern Norway - Tromsø. One of the Nasjonaleturistveger routes is dedicated to Senja. However, in today’s blogpost, we will write about a different, smaller island. At the same time, this island is actually one of the stops along the Senja tourist route.

If you looked at a map of Senja, it would almost resemble a hand. In the northern part of the island, you will find the “fingers”, which in reality are tall and thin mountain ranges, extending far into the waters of Norwegian Sea. In between two of those “fingers” you will find Husøy, a little islet and a fishing village bearing the same name.

When you come to Senja from Tromsø, most likely by Brensholmen - Botnhamn ferry, after just a few minutes take a right turn from the main road. You will drive towards Husøy alongside a scenic road, surrounded mountains and lakes, so characteristic for northern Norway. Not long after, you will find yourself driving down the fjord and towards the sea. And in the middle of it all - a small island.

Fortunately, Husøy is conntected to Senja by a land bridge. In the past, it was only accessible by boat. It is best to leave your car on the parking lot outside of the islet, however. The island itself is so small and so densely packed with houses that you may find it hard to find anywhere to park, except from someone’s driveway.

During your walk on the island you will see, along many others, a small chapel and a school. All the time you will be accompanied by the astounding view of the mountains surrounding the island. This makes it so any picture you take on your way, will look absolutely amazing. However, the best spot on the whole island lies at the very end of it. The northern end of Husøy is adorned by a little lighthouse from where you can see the entirety of the magnificent fjord.

If you ever get a chance to visit northern Norway, Senja is a must-go. Husøy is only one of the spots on the route - considered to be one of the very best in the whole country.
